Neuroblastoma

Understanding Neuroblastoma

Neuroblastoma is a rare type of cancer that primarily affects children, usually appearing in the adrenal glands, which are located on top of the kidneys, as well as in nerve tissue along the spine, chest, abdomen, or pelvis. This cancer develops from immature nerve cells, called neuroblasts, and can vary widely in its aggressiveness, ranging from slow-growing tumors that may spontaneously regress to aggressive forms that spread rapidly to other parts of the body.

Symptoms and Diagnosis

Symptoms of neuroblastoma can vary depending on where the tumor is located and whether it has spread. Common signs may include:

  • Swollen abdomen
  • Pain or lumps in the abdomen or chest
  • Changes in bowel habits
  • Difficulty breathing
  • Bone pain or limping
  • Unexplained weight loss
  • Fatigue or weakness

Diagnosis typically involves a combination of physical exams, imaging tests (such as ultrasound, CT scan, MRI, or MIBG scan), biopsies, and laboratory tests to confirm the presence of neuroblastoma and determine its stage and extent of spread.

Treatment and Support

Treatment for neuroblastoma often involves a multidisciplinary approach, including surgery to remove the tumor, chemotherapy, radiation therapy, and other specialized treatments such as immunotherapy or targeted therapy. The specific treatment plan will depend on factors such as the child’s age, the tumor’s location and stage, and the overall health of the child.

While advancements in treatment have improved outcomes for many children with neuroblastoma, the journey can be challenging for both the child and their family. Supportive care services, including counseling, financial assistance, and access to resources for managing side effects and long-term effects of treatment, play a crucial role in helping families cope with the physical, emotional, and financial burdens of neuroblastoma.

Our Commitment

At SRM Foundation, we recognize the immense impact that neuroblastoma can have on families and the importance of providing support and resources to those affected by this rare cancer. Through our dedicated efforts, we strive to empower families facing neuroblastoma by offering financial assistance, emotional support, and access to vital resources to help them navigate their journey with strength, resilience, and hope.

Together, we can make a difference in the lives of children battling neuroblastoma and work towards a future where every child has the opportunity to thrive, free from the burden of cancer.
