Hodgkin Lymphoma

Understanding Hodgkin Lymphoma

Hodgkin Lymphoma, also known as Hodgkin’s disease, is a type of cancer that originates in the lymphatic system. Named after Dr. Thomas Hodgkin, who first described it in 1832, this form of cancer typically affects the lymph nodes, though it can spread to other organs in the body.

Types and Symptoms

Hodgkin Lymphoma is divided into two main types: classical Hodgkin Lymphoma and nodular lymphocyte-predominant Hodgkin Lymphoma. The classical type is further categorized into four subtypes based on the types of cells found in the tumor. Common symptoms of Hodgkin Lymphoma include swollen lymph nodes, fever, weight loss, fatigue, itching, and night sweats. However, symptoms may vary depending on the stage and location of the cancer.

Diagnosis and Treatment

Diagnosing Hodgkin Lymphoma usually involves a combination of physical exams, imaging tests (such as CT scans or PET scans), and biopsy of lymph nodes. Once diagnosed, treatment options may include chemotherapy, radiation therapy, targeted therapy, or stem cell transplant, depending on the stage and subtype of the cancer. The prognosis for Hodgkin Lymphoma has greatly improved over the years due to advancements in treatment modalities, with many patients achieving long-term remission or cure.
