Chronic Myeloid Leukemia (CML)

Understanding Chronic Myeloid Leukemia (CML)

Chronic Myeloid Leukemia (CML) is a form of cancer that affects the blood and bone marrow. It is characterized by the uncontrolled growth of myeloid cells, which are a type of white blood cell responsible for fighting infections and carrying oxygen throughout the body.

In individuals with CML, a genetic abnormality known as the Philadelphia chromosome is often present. This chromosome results from a mutation where parts of chromosome 9 and chromosome 22 break off and switch places. This fusion of genetic material leads to the production of an abnormal protein called BCR-ABL, which plays a central role in the development of CML.

Symptoms of CML can vary from person to person but may include fatigue, weakness, weight loss, night sweats, and an enlarged spleen. However, some individuals may remain asymptomatic for a long time and are diagnosed incidentally during routine blood tests.

Treatment for CML has advanced significantly in recent years, offering patients several options to manage the disease. Targeted therapies such as tyrosine kinase inhibitors (TKIs), which specifically target the BCR-ABL protein, have revolutionized the management of CML. These medications help control the growth of leukemic cells and can induce long-term remission in many patients.

Despite these advancements, living with CML can present challenges, both physical and emotional, for patients and their families. It requires ongoing monitoring and adherence to treatment regimens. Additionally, managing the financial burden of treatment can be overwhelming for many individuals, especially those from economically disadvantaged backgrounds.

At SRM Foundation, we understand the impact that a diagnosis of CML can have on individuals and their loved ones. Through our dedicated support services and initiatives, we strive to provide assistance to needy cancer patients, ensuring they have access to essential treatments, medications, and resources. Together, we can make a difference in the lives of those affected by Chronic Myeloid Leukemia, offering hope and support every step of the way.
